Instructor Fatally Shot and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Armed Clash at Nigerian School
Armed assailants have killed a teacher and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a educational institution for young women in north-western Nigeria, according to police.
The armed faction breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.
The armed individuals "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a shootout" before breaching the school's outer barrier and taking the pupils captive from their hostel, authorities disclosed.
One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now being treated medically.
Observers recounted a considerable contingent of armed individuals, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to cause panic.
Local residents told reporters that the armed men then led a contingent of young women into nearby bushland.
The authorities announced they had sent "additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups" to the area.
