On his inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold commencement to his administration.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The young democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting counsel to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Basic Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and ensuring reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
