Around fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Officers say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then located numerous other smeared automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police say early analysis indicate the substance was most likely human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its source; officials are currently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to unravel the case" and have requested to the residents for details.
A senior official commented the attack rendered him speechless and had to be solved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a assailant targeting individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
