When Sunbathers Escaped Danger, Popular Photo Captures Rescuer Running ‘Full Speed’ Towards the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, views the renowned beach as her back yard. On that particular weekend night, she, like many neighbors, heard pops ringing out through the community.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was too light and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. She left her home, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. Their expressions they wore told her something was wrong.

Positioned on the street, speaking to a duo who had run up the hill still dripping wet, she became aware of someone coming up at her rear. This turned out to be a lifeguard, running at full speed to Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I only caught a glimpse of this blur of blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. It was just him heading in the path that all the others was trying to escape from, and hauling that sizeable pack and barefoot … He’s running towards something that surely every fibre in your being would instruct you to run in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely pedal to the metal sprinting.”

A Symbol of Heroism During Tragedy

The photo Ching captured of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many acts of courage in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, police and ambulance crews caring for dozens of those hurt.

Local Response and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to come out of the neighbourhood, with the patrol base next to the location of the attack serving as a temporary medical station. Reports indicate that colleagues were also seen taking action, such as going into the surf to rescue people needing help.

In the days after the tragedy, messages of appreciation were shared. An online statement conveyed thanks for the responders who showed that “goodness will always conquer hatred”.

The team of rescuers later shared a communication, explaining they were “processing what happened”.

“We are grateful all for your supportive words and encouragement. We are touched by the care shown towards our personnel,” the group wrote. “When ready, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it supports those affected.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many professional lifeguards, stated that the crew acted heroically from the moment the violence commenced right into late that nighttime.

“There have been so many emotional stories, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help save lives is incredible,” stated a council representative.

“Our lifeguards demonstrate altruism every day in keeping our iconic shores secure for the public, but what we observed on that evening should be commended.

“During this time of sorrow and come to terms with the horror of this violent and horrific act of violence, I think it is important that we consider just how much light we have observed in the face of such darkness.”
